xwatchmanx, you seem to be missing the point. Let me summarize it for you.

- Wii owners who bought VC game -> Can transfer to Wii U and still play on vWii -> Can upgrade for $1
- Wii U owners -> Can buy VC game on eShop for ~$6.

Wii owners bought the Wii version of the VC game. That's the product that they purchased. If they want to play it on their Wii U, they can transfer it to the Wii U and play it on vWii. Nothing changes, they still got what they purchased.

For a small fee, they can upgrade to the superior Wii U version and gain the extra features available (button remapping, save-states, Miiverse). Nothing happens to their existing product though, they can still play with the Wii VC that they purchased. They're not losing any money, in fact they're saving money compared to Wii U owners who have to purchase it new.
how are they saving money if they're overall paying more than new customers?

Except they're not paying more. There are two different products - Wii VC and Wii U VC.

They already bought the Wii VC and nothing happens to that. If they want, they have the option to transfer it to the Wii U or simply keep it on their Wii.

The other product is the Wii U VC. It has new features such as Miiverse support, button-remapping (even on touch-screen) and save states. They get a discount on the new product, the Wii U VC versus new customers. They aren't paying more.

While it would be nice if Nintendo implemented a cross-buy function, they have no obligation to do so. They're a business, not a charity.

Yes, but once you do the transfer and upgrade, both "licenses" (if you even keep the Wii version after the upgrade? we don't know yet) are locked to the same system. So the Wii version becomes literally useless, and hence you did, indeed, pay more for one version of the game.

If you got to keep the Wii version and, say, put it back on your Wii to have it on another system afterward, i would understand. Heck, if they were charging you FULL PRICE while still letting you keep the Wii version on another machine I would understand (technically that's possible, if you never transfer, but then you can't transfer anything ELSE you might want from your Wii). But that's not the case, here.

All you paid for was the Wii VC. And nothing happens to that product. When you buy a Wii U VC, does your Wii VC become non-functional and stops loading? No, that product is still there and perfectly functional.

You got to realize that the Wii VC and the Wii U VC are two different products with different features. When you bought the Wii VC, all you bought was a license to use that emulator on your Wii. There was no agreement that said you would get the option to use it on multiple consoles or upgrade it to a future Wii U version for free.

But the Wii version is effectively useless because it's locked to the same damn machine as the upgraded version. That would be like if owning a DVD movie got you a discounted bluray version of the movie (that cost just as much as the DVD was when you bought it), and after purchase, your bluray player magically swallowed both and said "here, you can only play the movie on this bluray player, but TECHNICALLY you can still watch the original DVD version on it if you want!" It's absolutely pointless, and unfair. At least in real life, if you buy a bluray version of a DVD you already own at full price, you have the freedom to continue to use the DVD elsewhere (play it in a room without a bluray player, watch it at a friend's without a bluray player, etc).

I don't think we're gonna see eye-to-eye on this though, so I'll just rest my case here. Feel free to take the final word, Soulx.

Look, when you paid for the Wii version, all you paid for was that product locked to your Wii. When you bought it, at the time, you knew full well that you couldn't transfer it to another device.

How is it unfair? You bought the Wii version and got what you paid for. If you want to get the Wii U version with extra features, you got to pay $1. Like I said, they're not some magical videogame charity.

Well no shit, there's no point using the Wii version. After all you bought an upgrade. That's like buying a discounted Bluray version of your existing DVD and then complaining that your DVD is now useless.

IGN did a surprisingly decent article on why it's fair so I'll just leave that here.

Hmm... To pay for old games and/or transfering those old games to a new system... or not to pay for that... That is the question. Oh wait!

I do not mind paying to use my VC games on the Wii U as you are paying for the emulator, but i do think it should be a 1 time fee as the emulator should be the same for a majority if not all games of a particular console as the Wii U has the power to run a complete emulator vs needing to build a custom one per game that is faster because of only emulating what each game needs to run. same goes for N64, there should be no need with a Wii U to need to develop specific ones per game as the Wii U has the power to do full speed N64, especially since Nintendo is writing it and they should have more knowledge of their own consoles then us. I also see absolutely no reason for saves to not be imported other then to prevent "Enhanced" saves from being copied from vWii to the Wii U. doing this would block any attempts to "Enhance" a save with the ability to exploit the Wii U and getting it on the Wii U via importing the save from vWii.

I don't really have a problem with paying the fee for VC games, regardless of whether or not this means I am spending more in total than a consumer purchasing the game on the WiiU VC. Obviously this is a problem for those who own a decent number of VC titles, but as repeatedly stated in this thread, those that feel they will not benefit from the updates need not transfer the titles to the WiiU VC.

I have no games to transfer to Wii-U (my Wii is hacked to shit), but I would have no problem paying an extra $1 to upgrade prior purchases. Even if I owned 35 Wii VC games, its not like I would feel compelled to update all of them. I would probably only upgrade 5-10 of my favorites, and just play the rest in Wii mode if need be.

People who think this is an unfair deal - you're basically thinking that you're entitled for a free copy of a game that has upgraded features on a new platform just because you bought the same game a few years ago on another platform.

If there were no differences at all between the Wii and Wii U VC, it might have been acceptable to be entitled to a free download. But they're not the same. Let me break it down to you:

-You bought the Wii VC knowing exactly what you were getting, and evidently you were willing to pay that price for it.
-It's not like you can't transfer them over to the Wii U for free. You just don't get the upgrade.
-Wii U VC has Miiverse support, off-screen play, and re-mappable button configuration. That makes Wii U VC more valuable.

Do you think that because you bought a cheeseburger at McDonald's last week and then they come out with the Double Cheeseburger, that you're entitled to a free one? No. Consider yourself lucky that you're getting an 80% discount in the first place.

Why oh why can't there be more sensible people like you on the internet?

So are only NES and SNES games going to be on Wii U?

What about my N64 and Wii Ware games (along with the other console games)?

Will those be stuck on vWii mode?

NES and SNES is all they announced atm. They'll likely include N64 down the road, just not now. They're also talking about GBA games on the Wii U too.

The way I see it is the cost of the work required by Nintendo to enable you to play VC games on Wii U is £5.00, but if you bought it previously on Wii they are only making you pay £1.00, so you got a bargain.

I very much doubt that much of the code for Wii, will have been reused on the Wii U, as it is massively different architecture. Not a simple add-on or patch.

I wonder what the price would be for transferring N64 games over, I was thinking about using my Club Nintendo points to get Paper Mario again, since I still havn't beat it yet. But If I did get Paper Mario, I wouldn't be able to play it because the lack of GC Ports.

When you say get it again did you have it on the Wii? Transferring is free, this upgrade process is just for upgraded features, which aren't available for N64 VC.
