I don't think anyone's child is going to be doomed to a life of crime and hatred for seeing the word "retard" on a Wii U community board.

Not that everyone should throw down slurs and insults but a 3 day ban for one word is just stupid. I can see Nintendo really hired a really hard ass staff. Or a Shutzstaffel.
You can't say that. It's "stern lawmaker".

I also don't think you meant to triple post that video...

To be fair, retard is a technical term.
Mental retardation is a thing, as is a retardant.

I wonder if anything would happen with the word retardant.

For making a joke about Dr Who that contained the word "reTARDIS" I got banned from the miiverse for 3 days. What a ****ing joke, the moderators on the community boards need to get their heads out of their asses, this is absolutely rediculous

Anyway, the warning to you all is that the moderators for the Wii U community are completely overzealous and if you post ANYTHING that could even remotely be considered offensive you might get banned

that is nothing, someone got banned for putting their xbox 360 gamertag on their profile and one guy got banned for saying "flipped off" on miiverse when talking about new super mario bros U.

when it comes out in the UK i'm not going to say anything at all on miiverse as they mods there are so over the top it's ridiculous, maybe they are not human or something? it could be automated, who knows.

Well, on the bright side, I won't be annoyed by stupid people with stupid comments when I use it. The one thing I hate the most about online multiplayer games on the 360 and the PC is the way people act, especially teenagers... I hear enough stupidity at school or at work, and then I need to see it on the games I want to play? Meh, I'm personally siding with Nintendo on this way of modding.

It's much more effective to give a temp ban than just warning users, we can see how it doesn't work that well on the temp or other places for example. x3

If I got completely banned from the network for 3 days over something so ridiculous that shouldn't even be an issue, I would be pretty pissed too.

To the OP, was the "offending" message in question via PM, public, or what?
Public Miiverse, they don't mod messages between friends.
Personally I'm glad they're moderating random messages, I mean that way I get strangers visiting without all the penis drawings on my home screen, this filters all the immaturity you already see on similar services like XBL for example, 3 day ban is extreme but then again being extreme makes their job easier and stops stupid stuff from getting posted again by the same user, in many cases it also prevents spammers.
They don't have time to judge if the material posted is worth a 1 hour ban or a 3 day long one, it's just a standard they have.

OP: Can you at least visit the community? I'm guessing they are only preventing you from posting.

That's pretty narrow minded to think that no one would take offense to that. There's been a considerable movement against bullying, trying to get people to use words other than "retarded" or "gay" to describe things (There's a pic floating around the intertubes that I can't find at the moment). Just because you weren't offended doesn't mean a family with an autistic child that has to deal with schoolmates calling him a retard wouldn't.

If he were banned I'd say this was harsh, but a 3 day suspension is hardly something to make a thread about.
Yeah, Nintendo should totally censor everything that might be considered offensive by someone in the world. They should forbid mentioning or drawing Goombas, as their name comes from the word "goombah", which is a perjorative slang that's considered offensive toward Italians. Heck, forbid any mention of Mario and Luigi as well, as some Italian people might get offended by them.

Edit: Typo

Nintendo is looking to money as always with this censorship. They just saving their sales. A lot of parents are still very conservative, and this kind of action make them fell safe and choose nintendo for their children.

so you would let your children play with zombieU etc.?
I don't think so....

YES, I let them play what they want. I've played doom, wolfentein 3d, etc when I was a kid, and I'm not a murder now.

And the fact that WiiU has gory games do not change the fact that it was made for children. Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, etc are franchises for children, even that many adults (like me) play it.

The internet is full of offensive or questionable language and at times is quite tiresome of seeing insults and name calling and most of that comes from kids. So I fully support Nintendo in taking Miiverse seriously by trying to keep all language that could offend even just a single person out of Miiverse. It's very inviting to parents and people of all ages to take part in Miiverse if the language is just good, honest clean fun. HOWEVER! suspending for 3 days is too much for a 1st offense. The most you should get for a 1st offense is either a warning or a 24hr suspension.

On another note if they can ban you from all forms of online then once homebrew comes along if it ever does, then if they can detect that you have modified your console then permanent bans will thrown around.

I hear a lot about the guy who got banned for listing a gamertag... but what is the source of that? I have posted 'personal information' in my profile, specifically my website address, and all that they did was block my profile comment from view until I fixed it and notified them. Replaced the direct mention of my site with a vague mention of 'my 3d skills', replied back to the miiverse administration message (multiple choice: 'fixed', 'not a violation', 'acknowledged but did not fix'), and my profile was once again visible 30 minutes later.

The Wii U is a console for 8 year old children. So don't be surprised if you get spanked like an eight year old for misbehaving.

You should TOTALLY check out the Nintendo DS library of games. A WHOLE LOT of them are games that little kids who know nothing (or very little) about gaming and ACTUAL GOOD games would play, but people like me will wish they spent their money on something more age appropriate like the PSP!

In a lot of ways, "retardation" is a technical term as much as "n*gger" was a good few years ago.
Retarded comes from the Latin retardare, "to make slow, delay, keep back, or hinder," so mental retardation means the same as mentally delayed. The term was recorded in 1426 as a "fact or action of making slower in movement or time." The first record of retarded in relation to being mentally slow was in 1895. The term retarded was used to replace terms like idiot, moron, andimbecile because retarded was not (then) a derogatory term. By the 1960s, however, the term had taken on a partially derogatory meaning as well. The noun retard is particularly seen as pejorative; as of 2010, the Special Olympics, Best Buddies and over 100 other organizations are striving to eliminate the use of the "r-word" (analogous to the "n-word") in everyday conversations.
It's still too much sweat over a joke in my opinion, but hey! It's a pejorative term, apparently.

Aaaah, I see what you did there! I see right through your trap! No ban for me, they're retro, eh? Gotta love'em, eh?
