Monkey wrench time!!

Up to 16 Wii Remote controllers (10 in Standard Mode, 6 in One Time Mode,[170] connected wirelessly via Bluetooth)
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii

- So, if the Wii can support 16 Wii Remotes... Imagine what the Wii U can do for local multiplayer.

The source claims it comes from the Wii instruction manual... anyone have that handy to confirm it? It doesn't make sense to me since you can't connect more than 4 wiimotes to one Wii, and no games that I know of can have more than 4 players, except Bomberman (which uses the gamecube controllers for up to 8 players)

Okay, that just means it can remember the ID's of that many (have that many synced) but only 4 can be connected (turned on) at any one time.

EDIT : "one time mode" is synced with the home menu with the 1+2 buttons. "Standard mode" is syncing them with the two red buttons on the Wii and Wiimote.
On and connected means one of the 4 lights on the Wiimote is on. (only 4 lights available)
Nevermind, thanks for clarifying.

I wouldn't be surprised if the playtime max is actually 8 Wii Remotes (considering how many times Nintendo has hinted at drumming games, Personally I dont think we will see a Wii U game max beyond 8 players (4 Remotes, 2 gamepads and 4 pro controllers) and that's just pushing it. The only game I can think of , using that many players would be a WWE game and only for Elimination Chamber (6 players max) and Royal Rumble matches.

Since the Nunchuck can easily emulate drumming with the shake built in, I don't see why that couldn't be accomplished with the wiimote and nunchuck, as opposed to two wiimotes.

Holding Wiimotes let alone playing with two Wiimotes seem like a bit much.

I agree with you but, ever heard of "Samba De Amigo"? I would rather play that game with 2 Wii remotes than with a remote and nunchuck and both "We Cheer" games are WAY better with dual Wii Remotes

I kinda think there'd be bandwidth issues pumping that many videos over Bluetooth at once ... but you never know ... and there's also added stress on the GPU that has to render everything yet another time for the other screen.

Just because the wiimote uses bluetooth, doesn't mean the wii u gamepad will use bluetooth too. In fact, I think it would be just too slow for streaming HD videos in first place, bluetooth has a maximum speed of 375KB/s. My guess is that it uses regular wireless and that's the reason you can use the gamepad with 4 wiimotes.

Agreed. I highly doubt the gamepad is bluetooth-based. Some of the old console emulators on my smartphone have options for multiplayer off wi-fi or bluetooth. and even when playing Super Mario Bros. on NES, using bluetooth when right next to the other person causes such huge lag compared to wifi.

Wouldn't it all depend on how much screen space each player needs? I can't imagine splitting a screen more than 4 ways XD. If all players could share the same screen then I guess the sky's the limit.
That's assuming it requires split screen at all. Games like Super Smash Bros. don't.

Exactly, but games that do require split screens will be limited by screen size. I just don't see Nintendo making a lot of games more than 4 players plus one on the gamepad.

I agree. Can you imagine NSMB with 8 players? Mario, Luigi, and 6 toads?

there's some gauntlet like game for Virtual Console which supports up to 7 players locally :D It's called Dungeon Explorer 2. It's great fun, but hard as hell :)

Pretty sure you can use your miis in the lastest one.
:P Maybe they'll make a game called New Super Mario Galaxy Online, an MMO social mario game where everyone just uses their Mii's :tpi: (and they show a toad head on everyone else while the Mii head is still loading just so they can call it a Mario game.) :rofl2:

They better have Wario and Waluigi.

I don't think so. They haven't been mentioned or shown once.

That said, I can kind of understand why they're not there. They need to keep the hitboxes and stuff the same, and Mario and Luigi are virtually identical, except Mario being a little fatter and Luigi being a little taller, so it's easier. Not so much with Wario being morbidly obese and Waluigi being grossly tall.

... They could have included them if they wanted to. They just didn't.

How could they have overcome the issues I just mentioned? They already said one of the reasons they excluded Princess Peach as a playable character is that her dress would "get in the way" and mess with the hitboxes. So we know there's at least one time they've excluded a character for this reason.

Hmm, that is true. Still, I'm sure some kinks could work out since neither are wearing dresses. LOL

Maybe. I think Wario would be more likely than Waluigi. I mean, they could keep one toad and replace the second toad with Wario or some other character. I can't think of who, though...
