Awkardness with my dad!

So.. Today.

My dad walked up and asked me if i was gay....
Just straight up.
I'm not gay.

But he think's since me and Scott talk everybody over skype we're dating
And since he bought me so much. But what was since i sent him something....

So.. awkwardly he asked me. It was fucking awkward!!
I was lost for words.... Why would a father just go up and ask me that?

If i was gay, Don't you think I would come out when I'm ready?
I guess he does not think that.

So.. I said no. He asked why i talk to Scott so often i said "Since he is awesome sauce"
My dad awkwardly walked away.... I think he still thinks I'm gay.

So... YEAHHH!!

He doesn't so much mind, just as long as this ends soon.

What's this about really? iFish was asked something and 'tempers repeating the same question over and over again?
Have we really sunk so deep?

iFish, next time your father brings it up, tell him you're not gay and ask him to stop mentioning it.

Don't worry about it, its actually a pretty regular response from a modern day parent. A lot of parents will ask that of their children even if they don't believe they are gay, just because these days one of the go-to answers for why someone may be having emotional troubles or acting out (among other things) is that they're either gay or have some sort of mental illness such as ADHD or depression, etc.

The fact is, people want quick fix answers, they want to wrap everything up with a nice little bow and say "This is the reason for this". That applies to parents as well. Now admittedly sometimes there are answers like that, but sometimes there are deeper levels of complexity to the issue that go beyond a one-off label like gay or straight.

When I was younger, I was having trouble with women and it was causing me a great deal of grief. So I confided in a few older and wiser acquaintances. Their immediate response to my inability to close the deal with girls at the time was "Are you gay?". Because that would have been so simple, so easy. That, of course, was not the case. I was just bad with girls. There was no deeper meaning, no underline psychological issue. Except perhaps a slight lack of confidence.

Furthermore, when it comes to frequently talking to a male friend via phone, skype, or whatever, don't sweat it. Its a common stereotype that teenage girls can chat on the phone for hours. Some do, some aren't like that at all. Well guys aren't really so different, best friends are best friends for a reason. They enjoy each others company.

It is not uncommon at all for two male teenage friends, especially ones without a lot going on in their lives (IE girlfriends, social activities, etc), to spend a lot of time together in various ways. Its a way to pass the time, to make a less than fantastic social life a bit easier to withstand.

To close up, lets just use a few movies as examples. Have you seen Kick-Ass? Superbad? Do you know why the male teen main characters are always together for the majority of those movies? To put it bluntly, because they're not getting any action. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, depending on your perspective. It simply comes down to this: if you're not doing anything better with your time, if you're just going to be spending it alone, why not converse with a friend? It doesn't mean you're gay, just lonely or bored.

Just my opinion, but your gender is set to female, which would attract a lot of attention from the younger male members of the forum, seems a bit gay dude. (Also probably why Canonbeat234 asked if you were a guy.)

had the same deal with my dad once, was pretty basic.

Dad: Are you Gay?
Me: Nope.
Dad: ok.
Me: Cool.

I agree with Ace Gunman's large post. My dad has never asked me if I was gay, but I knew he thought about it a couple times only because....

1)at one point my best friend was a guy and we'd ALWAYS hang out but that was because there are lots of ignorant people where I live and I don't associate with ignorance
2)my current best friend of three years is gay even though she is a female
3)up until 12th grade did my dad find out I was dating (even though I started dating in 11th grade...because decent girls are hard to find where I live plus I'm not to good with girls).

My dad never asked me (probably because we already have a pretty horrible relationship as is), but I know he use to think it at times. He of course has nothing to worry about as he has recently found out I've had intercourse (thats a funny story for another topic entirely lol).

Me not caring what my parents think of me (mainly my dad who, once again, I have a strained relationship with) I'd say not to worry about it and go on with life.

Dad: Got yourself a girlfriend yet?
Me: Nope.

Dad quickly rounds the phone call up with try your best in college and says bye.
