I'm obsessed with flat earthers

Lately, I've been completely enthralled by the existence of people who genuinely believe the Earth is flat. Like, how are there seriously THIS many people who can't comprehend basic math and observation? It's seriously insane to me and I can't help but obsessively watch videos of these people trying to explain why they believe Earth is flat and I don't know why it's so intriguing. I guess just the scope of how large this group is has been something I simply can't wrap my mind around. Now it's my goal to meet one of these people in real life to disprove their terrible logic with elementary-level education. Which, this desire somewhat makes me think I'm being a jerk, but I'll also be potentially helping someone not look crazy in their future (If I could even convince them, which based on my "research," seems unlikely), so I'm fine with it. I don't know why this is a blog, but I felt weird about my obsession, so I thought I'd share, lol.

@TotalInsanity4 I am going to point out their believes based on the order you answered the questions

If the earth doesn't rotate, then why does a plane ride going from east to west take less time than west to east?

as already pointed out, earths rotation, wether it be a globe or a plane, should not have any affect on travel time. Any effect on travel time should have other causes.

If gravity doesn't exist, how do planes work in the first place? Are they a facade hiding a Zeppelin underneath?

FE don't believe in gravity. They do believe things drop to the floor because they are denser than air. They conveniently reject the notion that their explanation of density and bouyancy being the cause of things floating and/or dropping is based on gravity. Why would their model of uplift require gravity? A plane drops to the floor because it is denser than air, unless it can create enough uplift.

If the earth is flat and doesn't rotate, why don't airlines use the Arctic circle as a shortcut to the other hemisphere
because if you look at their map (https://flatearthdisclosure.wordpress.com/flat-earth/flat-earth-maps/) you can see that our flightpaths (London to New York for example: http://www.gcmap.com/featured/20150121) match up with their shortest sraight line after being flatened to their map. If a fligth path would be shortest over the arctic circle, it would be so an a globe earth as well as a flat earth. Flight over the arctic circle might not be viable, though, as flight rules require planes to always be within a certain radius of possible airports (in case of an emergency).

@TotalInsanity4 it's important to note prove and use are very distinct here. Ancient greeks generally believed the earth was spherical and so did many societies. Not sure about cannons but I think what affects the bullets is more the coriolis effect from earth's rotation than the curvature, and that type of calculation had to be empirical. Perhaps they did account for the curvature itself, but did not need more than empirical evidence. As for how modern it needs to be, well different evidence provides different levels of reliability, it depends on how much you're comfortable with really. I'd say at least not before Tycho Brahe.

The most ridiculous thing is the conspiracy. Just think of everyone who'd have to be in on it. All space agencies, travel agencies, meteorologists, any company that owns a satellite, and any field that requires taking Earth's shape into account.

@TotalInsanity4 regarding your question why flights are faster e-w than w-e:

http://curious.astro.cornell.edu/ab...ake-longer-to-fly-west-than-east-intermediate

The cause of flights being shorter is, viewed directly, the jetstream that always blows westwards. EDIT: correction, eastwards
We might be able to reason the wind direction to be caused by the rotation, but for a flat-earth model, the wind is just there.

If you're really curious on how they are going to explain these winds, you might want to ask in a flat-earth group.

EDIT: I just realized that article totaly contradicts your claim that e-w flights are faster than w-e

It's also important to note that the spherical model is much simpler and explains things like day and night and moon's shape much more easily. There's a myth stating many were flat earthers until modern age, that's absolutely false and the vast majority believed (or didn't care at all) the earth was round in middle age europe, ancient greece and rome and many other places.

Well I had a good laugh reading this. :)

Don't have the time to watch all the videos at the moment, but how do flat-earthers explain how ships disappear, when they go over the horizon? If on land you could explain it with a big hill, but I can't think of a way to make such an excuse for water.

@Reiten They think they don't disappear. They believe you can infinitely zoom in on them and they'll never disappear. Couldn't they just set up a telescope and see them sink over the horizon?

I genuinely believe this is a hoax. People can’t be this stupid...right?
Also, I recommend you watch professor stick on YouTube.

Also, did you know that the Flat Earth Society was founded by an elemtary school dropout? Seriously.

Idk it's baffling. The sun is round. The moon is round. We spin in circles. We can all be wrong but we'll never know. Maybe if we live long enough what I imagine is that we will have ships to go and mine resources and ships the size of cities. Like how we went from the industrial age to the digital age (some definitions say this is the 3rd industrial age others say the second was the economic age), our next age long after we are gone will likely be living next to mountains of trash left by us or worse forced out by nuclear fallout.

While the earth isn't completely spherical it is still far from being flat

1) Sun:
If the earth was flat and the sun was near(because of the angle shadows have at different points on the earth), with the atmosphere we have right now and how we view it in the sky, it would need to be a lot smaller and a lot colder, which is not how stars work to say the least. The reason is that the Sun is essentially a (hypothetical for flatbrains) dense hydrogen(and helium) celestial body with a perimeter of 1.39 million kilometers, which due to the high pressure and temperature, because it has a very high volume of gases, a process known as fusion is happening, turning the hydrogen atoms to helium, and as a byproduct, part of the energy is being converted and radiated as light, due to the inability to transfer heat in a vacuum because of the lack of a medium to transfer it(outside the sun). In the flat earth, because it is a lot smaller than a "globehead Sun" shaped star should be, the whole process above doesn't take place, and the existence of flat earth with a sun cannot be explained

2) Gravity:
All atoms of earth and for every celestial object are trying to pull themselves together as close as possible to the center of mass of each object, thus resulting in a sphierical-ish objects. If the earth was actually flat, imagine travelling to the edges of a flat earth, it would seem as climbing a hill that had an increasing angle, because the further you travel from the center of mass on a flat earth, the higher the angle you percieve as down compared to the flat surface, and objects would be attracted towards the center. Not to mention that the earth would collapse and form a spherical-ish object

3) Day and night:
If the earth was flat, then the light from the sun would light up every region of the earth(except where there is mountains). Also, it wouldn't sunrise or sunset the way it does in a round earth.

4) Travelling:
I can travel and keep a straight direction in the equator and after 40075km of distance travelled meet and at the same point I began

tl;dr you are an idiot, read all the arguments

The first 10 seconds will send you down the rabbit hole

Basically, Mike tries to prove the Earth is flat. He didn't do it.

@AaronUzumaki I understand that flat-earthers think that things only get smaller as they get farther from the observer, and that you could observe them indefinitely, if you had a powerful enough telescope. But this line of thought contradicts what we actually see with objects on the sea and the horizon. How do flat-earthers explain this contradiction? Or do they stuff their fingers in the ears and hum a merry tune, when somebody asks the question?

@Lucifer666 They explain that by the fact that planes never cross Antarctica, which they believe to be surrounding the edges of the disc.

I have a theory about these people: There was a South Park episode that was called "Holiday Special". It was about Randy ranting about Columbus and how he killed a million people blah blah blah. People may have been influenced by this episode thinking that if Columbus is such a terrible person, then they shouldn't believe the things he said either. Columbus declared that the Earth was round. so peice that together
