My Unorganized Thoughts on Ready Player One

Spoiler Warning!

Overall, not a bad film and one of the only ones where I'm willing to enjoy the parts without considering the sum. The Oasis is super well designed and executed in this film and its designers were cast perfectly. The remaining cast is competent as well, but a large chunk of the overarching plot is kinda lackluster which took away from my enjoyment of the majority of the characters when they aren't in The Oasis. Within the game however, I didn't find a single part bland, but only because I'm willing to look past how unbelievable it is that nobody has found this confirmed Easter egg in five years. Actual gamers would've easily been able to acquire all the keys within a week, tops. While the plot isn't great, the effects are. Everything looks amazing and even the sound effects and animations for anything nostalgic are very respectful to their source materials and you can call me Kendrick, because this movie gave me a nostalgia boner as big as the Eiffel Tower. There were so many nods and references and they weren't at all shoved down your throat like I was expecting them to be. They're more like the finite details of a painting that leave you coming back a few more times to see if you missed anything. The part with The Shining was perfect and possibly one of my favorite scenes overall. Oh, another negative was the terrible love story written in. It is very cringe and probably my least favorite thing. Mostly, I appreciate the amount of love that clearly went into crafting everything inside The Oasis. I don't think this'll be taking the crown from Wreck-It-Ralph as my favorite video game related movie, but it definitely left an impact on me. That is all.

trust me when I say, the movie really is a pale imitation of the book. For example the love story is actually fleshed out rather than being " i love you " " well i dont love you " 5 minutes later " actually i do love you " lol
There is an actual reason for it being there in the book with Wade actually becoming quite stalkerish at one point.

But in all honesty I'm glad you enjoyed it, hopefully it will be enough for you to pick up the book or audio book ( which is read by Wil Wheaton )

The Oasis itself wasn't at all like what I expected it to be. But maybe that's because I've been watching Vinesauce.
The movie itself was great, though I couldn't immerse myself fully in it because I watched a screening of it at The Gathering (a huge computer party), and there weren't any good seats and it was extremely crowded so I sat really far away from the screen, barely enough to make out most of the details, and had people walking in front of me constantly. There was a period towards the end of the movie where like 20 minutes went by without anyone walking in front of me and it was a pretty great 20 minutes.
Anyway, I think I'm going to have to watch it again either in a cinema or once it comes out in high quality (likely the latter since I just saw it after all), so I can enjoy it fully as well as rewatch some of the things I missed due to being distracted.

The Oasis is supposed to be so much more than that. It's supposed to be viewed as a way to live. Wade in the beginning of the book has dropped out of regular school due to bullying ( if memory serves ) and instead attends school in the Oasis using a government basic Oasis device. You may need to eat asleep in the real world but you do most of your living in the Oasis.

Yeah, I was actually planning to read the book first, but I learned from Harry Potter that reading the book first iss a terrible idea. I will read it soon enough.

Overall i agree with you, but this part "how unbelievable it is that nobody has found this confirmed Easter egg in five years"
Five years to get to review the entire life of a person, even if there's millions people doing it the first year (iirc they say it in the movie), i think is pretty accurate, there's not that much of hardcore gamers as it seems and people tend to grow and get obligations, so the games go to a second lvl.

The only issue with that is that Percival not only had already seen the memory, but had it memorized before he found the clue. And it was stated that it was a particularly important memory. Plus, everyone knew the first challenge was a race, so there's no way the words "pedal to the metal" wouldn't spark immediate analysis by anyone who saw that particular memory. Regardless, it's a small nitpick really.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
