3DS Themer Log - Day 2 Part 1

Picking up right from where I left off, I continued looking for more renders for a little bit and then took a break for with a little bit of thinking here and there. During this time I was also narrowing down the list of bgms to a couple of potential songs, getting tentative songs for Nagato, Kyon, Haruhi, Koizumi, Tsuruya, Mikuru, and Imouto-san, leaving just the final encompassing song left.

Since a large majority of the bgms have no words (as one would expect), that bars songs like the ending credits which has words and one of Nagato's songs that I actually really fancy. Since I still don't actually have any set in stone layout for the top and bottom screen backgrounds yet, I might move on to the standard sound effects that I want to use (of course, while still looking for more assets). The current plan is to use a common set of "base sfx" which consist of the more minor sounds like the cursor movement, frame transitions, and maybe folder open/close. The open lid, launch, and close app might be some voice clips since I have them (character/theme specific ones), though only if I can find matching ones for every character.

My main worry is the fact that the more sideline characters don't have quite as many renders or artwork in general (Tsuruya, Asakura, Imouto-san, Koizumi). Koizumi especially is problematic because he probably has one of the least amount of resources that I can find. I have at best, 4 renders available for Koizumi (2 of them are vector art). The other side characters are also in a similar position. I'll probably look into seeing what visuals I can rip from the games in order to increase my asset pool. Worst case, I may have to hunt for resources from the anime itself if I'm not satisfied with the ones I have.

While looking for more and more renders, I decided to make some quick icon borders using the same idea as my Nisekoi theme, AKA a seifuku from the anime. Of course, there aren't any mini icons for just the seifuku so I made my own and added a shoddy ribbon for slightly more accuracy.

Afterwards, I went back to finding more tentative sound effects. This is rather tedious because of the sheer number of voice acted lines that are available in the games. As unfortunate as it is though, the voice acting with the most standardized phrases was from the NDS rom...which has a noticeable lack of audio quality when compared to the PSP games. Worst case scenario, I'll probably use them if I truly can't find anything else, but otherwise I'm avoiding them.

Funnily enough, even with the huge number of VA lines, I'm searching for particular phrases (listening to Japanese as a person that doesn't know Japanese), which pretty much means I'm relying on my years of anime listening. All in all, most of the sounds for Haruhi are actually selected, and so I could probably continue on to the actual images for my first theme.

This entire time, I've been listening to strictly Suzumiya Haruhi music, audio, and sound effects for pretty much the past two days. It's going to probably continue for the most part until I finish ._.

Character themes are kind of a finicky thing to deal with thanks to the 3ds having the ability for scrolling top screens. I like keeping a perfectly view-able first screen, but I also like having some variance throughout the scrolling...which kind of dampens things.

To summarize why this is an issue:
- I have limited renders available that resemble the light novel artwork or at the very least, other renders.
- Out of those renders, almost all of them are in completely different poses, angles, sizes, and cropped.
- Having the same character more than once in the foreground is kind of repetitive, unless I can consider them different entities (aka, alternate long-haired Haruhi or child Haruhi).
- Using ANY of those alternate characters means I'd run into issues with literally any character that isn't the main three heroines.

I'm going to really need to ponder on how I am going to lay out the top screen in a way that I can keep the general layout throughout all of the character themes. On a different note, I'm not really keeping track of how many hours I've spent on the theme since it's sort of sporadic throughout the day.
