Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

Thanks for trying it! Labelling from the top side will increase the size of the board which i'm really not keen on, hopefully once the board is released the documentation can be a good substitute. What do you mean by solder pads next to the flex cable connector on the right side? do you want the...

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

New version is even smaller, waiting on more feedback from the rest of the testers then it'll get any changes needed and released

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

Everything is so compressed on this board, especially on the new version that it really will take up space. if you look at the new picture (https://gbatemp.net/threads/mcfly-an-rp2040-board-compatible-with-picofly.629024/post-10128107) and take into account text size requirements and silk...

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

Quick browse on LCSC shows all 6 pin 0.5mm pitch double sided connctors wwith a slim height are either the hirose or a knockoff of the hirose, i'm going to fiddle with the board i have to hand and see if i can find out why it wasn't working in both orientations 1681818217 Pin labels on the top...

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

The Hirose FH34 connector I chose was supposed to be double sided but didn't seem to work, I'll see if I can find another low profile one

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

I've got one left but that's for me, I want to use it for a keyboard lol. yeah the FFC connector breaks out a GPIO pin to a 6 pin 0.5mm pitch flat flex connector which i think aligns with the aliexpress CPU flexes

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

Final board specs, provided nothing shows up in testing XY Size: 18.7x18.0mm Thickness: ~1.6mm (substrate thickness and component selection dependent) Component count: 36 total, 17 different types (Some of which are optional e.g. fpc connector) All components available on LCSC LCSC BOM cost for...

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

Huh. That's cool. I mean it's not designed to fit in a switch, it's just designed for general space constrained applications. I didn't really expect my silly little project to get an article all to itself lol

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

It's KiCad. EasyEDA is not good enough for this sort of design

Optimising the design whilst i wait for the postal service to do their jobs, can shrink it by another 1.5mm in one axis

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

The boards are not on github yet, I dont want to risk people copying the source files of a potentially defective device

Github I won't be selling them No

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

Files will come eventually, please be patient. i'm not going to put out defective hardware to be copied a thousand times over, i'd never be able to sleep at night haha. Once the testers have got it in hand and can confirm all is well then it will be released for everyone to enjoy

I'm not going to say, i respect their privacy, if they choose to talk and post about their experiences with the mcfly that's up to them

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

At a guess less than 10 bucks each including pcb. Rp2040s are cheap. Also all components can be ordered from lcsc so no looking in multiple places to source the components

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

No, This is just a general purpose dev board for fitting the RP2040 in cramped locations, it's not the right shape to fit in that space unfortunately

Hacking Hardware McFly - an RP2040 board compatible with Picofly

Been hard at work this weekend. Got all my PCBs assembled. 4 to go off to the people who have kindly offered to test them and one for me. I'm sure I can find some use for it

These LEDs are really designed to be hotplated or ir reflow ovened but I don't have a reflow oven and was too lazy to get the hotplate out for one component
