    Well actually they're really careful with their words and make it almost always go back to downloading the roms from the internet. There is actually a part on this page (https://www.nintendo.com/corp/legal.jsp) where they say "The backup/archival copy exception is a very narrow limitation...

    It means that I can't use my 2DS to get DS roms. I suppose I could get SM64DS from the Wii U virtual console and rip it from there, so it's not too big of a deal.

    I mean I know there will be basically zero consequences for downloading roms, but I'm not comfortable with downloading them. But that requires me to download illegal copyrighted content - is it the only way?

    Are there any ways of ripping cartridges without downloading them? Otherwise it makes more sense to download the roms, since it's illegal either way.
