makerom uses a lot of RAM, so you should be patient. You can also do what Wuigi said:
ctrtool -p --content=c moon.cia
and then rename c.0000.00000000 to moon.cxi and play it with Citra. ctrtool uses less RAM than makerom, so it will not freeze your PC.

I appreciate your effort. I recommend taking a look at the game's RomFS, because save editing for data-based game like SoS is very hard without datamining.
There is no exception, because there are certain bytes in the item table that determines item category. Here is my breakdown:
0x0 - 0x98: Weapons
0x99 - 0x386: Armors
0x387 - 0x435: Tools
0x436 - 0x5C4: Decorations
0x5C5 - 0x833: Consumables
0x834 - 0x9FE: Materials
0x9FF - 0xA1C: Key Items...
