Gotta love the choice of soundtracks in Initial D, I've grown out of music in general yet those songs are the only ones that get any sort of emotional response from me!
Oh god, not 5th stage. That anime left a bad taste when they added angelic wings and supernatural bullshit... Despite those unsavory bits, I have a soft spot for Mako's Impact Blue OST.
Honestly now, I see people complaining about the 4th stage and on all the time just because it keeps getting art-style changes and it can look weird, but in reality that's easy to get used to and if you consider that stages 4-6 came out with HUGE hiatuses in between, it's to be expected they will use different teams and engines.
Another point is how Takumi started being good with mechanics and lost his "I'm just gonna drive like I normally do" attitude, but really, if he had stayed like that it would have been BAD, mainly because after so many years you'd want the main character to show some sort of progression, growing up, learning things, evolving, etc., so to me it's a good thing.
The plot is really solid in the 4th stage too, ending with an amazing battle against God Foot and God Arm that was just full of twists and incredibly fun, while 5th stage is interesting and ending in the 6th stage with the last battle against Sidewinder in a 86 vs 86 race that makes the one against Wataru (2nd stage, the race where Deja Vu plays) look like nothing!
I don't get what you mean by the supernatural bullshit, if you mean the "zone"s (the thing that is like they teleport like a meter ahead suddenly when cornerning), that's an actual phenomenon that happens at high speeds between someone who's used to them and someone who isn't and if you mean the "aura", sure it's displayed badly, but that also happens, just not visually, rather emotionally feeling pressured.
The ACTUAL worst part of the series was the 3rd stage really, SHITTY movie, focusing on some damn slutty girl I couldn't care less about, not episodes so it got tiring, boring characters overall and only redeeming part was an interesting race against one of Bunta's rival's son...
And don't get me started on the music, 4th stage's opening is amazing, the music keeps getting better and we get even more eurobeat! PS: I actually liked the wings aesthetic to signify how relaxed Takumi was during driving, plus it was literally just shown only two times for a couple seconds...
This anime does have a lot of technical racing stuff, but the whole distance jump crap, especially the NSX vs RX-7 race, broke my immersion... Real life physics doe not work that way *shakes head*. I don't mind the pressure aura as that's hard to express the characters' state of emotion otherwise.
Because of its delayed released, I think jumping into 5th stage after having done some JPN car tuning and studied mechanical engineering, shattered my rose tinted opinion of that show. I'm surprised not a single driver ever crashed and died in that show.
Due to the show's popularity, there was rise of auto deaths for those who touged race those "turfs" depicted in the show, that many of those roads now have speed bumps so idiots can't drift them anymore. You cannot tell me with a straight face this isn't flaming geh-a : https://i.pinimg.com/736x/84/30/c8/8430c82f9ae57599ede93f64399ba5f9.jpg
i gotta say, the steam deck isn't a bad deal, even if you get a used one, you have options to get it serviced and the parts are also available through ifixit
