Yeah, that's why I'm biased against tap water. In this village I live the tap water is extremely contaminated with all sorts of crap; it's not even transparent, and it looks and smells disgusting. And it obviously tastes horribly bad.
@Sono, here's this very nifty device called the Sawyer's water filter that'll continually work so long as you don't freeze it. It will quickly filter sediments and bacterias. The only thing it can't do is kill virus and filter chemicals. You'll need boiling / UV light / flouride to kill virii, and coconut black carbon + ion-exchange resin filters to pull chems (buy wholesale to refill Brita filter pitchers).
Yeah, this won't be better without some sort of chemical neutralization. It contains all sorts of physical (visible) and chemical (according to the taste) contamination. It's clean enough for showering if you can bear the pain of tiny rock particles hitting you really hard and fast.
