It's just that I'm not sure how well the engine will work and buying it only to regret it is something I literally can't afford, so looking to make the game first and if it reaches a state I can actually consider good enough for release, I then plan to buy the engine. Have regretted too many unfinished projects after all...:/

Depends on what country you're in. I did the same with Minecraft for 3.5yrs and never got into any trouble.

Thing is, I'm worried about any legal issues involving it, as I'll be actually selling the game I plan to make for money and get the income taxed and all, so can't very well do it haphazardly if there's a risk involved. Just want to know if there will be legal issues, mainly (eg: some weird clause stating I need to have owned the engine from the start in order to monetize).

I see what you mean...

In that case I suggest first getting yourself familiar with the engine, and if you know for sure that you want to use this, buy the program before publishing your game.
Alternatively, once you have made enough progress, make some sort of preorder thingy so you can get enough money from preorders (if you're lucky enough) to be able to buy the program if you're completely broke.

I am familiar with the engine, just considering using a different one and don't know how the licensing works for it (Gamebryo) because their website says nothing, so GameMaker Studio is the closest one to it... I want to make a game that's kinda between Sid Meier's Pirates and Cutthroats but with some notable differences to set it apart (Gamebryo would be best for that).

And I plan to use Indiegogo for crowdfunding at least some small part of it before release and use that money to buy the engine, as I'm literally broke...
