I remember hearing on ActFur that those finals before Uni "Down Under" are quite important. Else you risk kind of getting stuck in this rut where you need good exams to continue but can't get them without good exams in the first place. Catch 22.
That's true. Well they indicate which courses at which unis you can get into. The better you do, the better chance you have of getting into your most preferred course, mine being IT. It doesn't require such a high ATAR (tertiary education rating/requirement number to get into a course) but I still need to do my best.
If you don't do them, you can't get into a more renowned field of expertise where pay is quite good after you complete your degree. You have to become a tradesman or do something that's less technical and complex (like law, medicine, IT, business management etc.).
We actually have a student debt if you go to university, not sure if it applies to the other forms of tertiary education, so no it's not as affordable but everything costs. So students generally have a part time job while they study.
