At my country this weekend was a real party and the «iluminación» (illumination) is a big event, everybody turn on the Christmas lights and decorations. the next December 16th we started the Christmas celebration with a religious ceremony and the praying of the «novena» (nine days praying) at each house or even at central communities, where the kids sing carols and reads bible passages about the travel of Mary, Jose
and the born of Jesus all around the manger representations. Even on some churches make it with live people. It's a diary celebration, Grandmas make traditional deserts and everyone share them.
The adults play «aguinaldos» which are games where the adults agree on rules, by example, «no body can say NO» or «the word mom is prohibited» and the one loosing owe a gift to the winner, so everyone is playing
At my mothers family there is another tradition, on the first novena, the figurine of baby Jesus is hidden by the oldest woman on the family member's house where the novena takes place that night and after the novena is finished and while the food is interchanged the kids can look for it. The kid who finds it receive a special treat that night.
