Are you able to pull just the save file from it?

@Seriel yes I had but the problem my brother doesn't use the 2DS XL, he uses the original 2DS and he wants to play it from his actual cartridge despite me telling him hundreds of times to play it on the XL but it's saved to my checkpoint at least

I see, well at least the important save file is not lost! I would try the program Scarlet linked, and if it doesn't work and installing a copy on sd card isn't an option I think you'd have to buy a new cart and restore the save file onto it.
