I can't find the slot to insert a ps2 disc into the SteamDeck

My bad. Saw a TV and the PS2 error message (but no Steam Deck) and assumed you got a PS2 in "new" condition not identifying legit discs.
Is it an emulator hanging in the BIOS? No idea really.
