being able to finally really get into the series- the sonic series, the one with like 30 sonic games, only like 5 of which fans actually recommend to anyone

I mean it doesn’t exactly look the best to someone like me when all the long time fans almost only talk about the first 3 being good. “How could you not like 3? It has knuckles!”

That’s never going to be a valid excuse- Knuckles isn’t worth $5 on sale

Welp... what would you suggest?
Only thing really stopping me from getting into sonic games is that you can barely see anything. It’s a fast-paced game, so I’ll constantly just smash into something because it takes much too long to process- especially on a 4:3 display.

The second thing would be the water levels- but I mean that’s like with every platformer ever so

Try Sonic 2. If you don't like that, play 3. If you wind up not liking the speed--to which neither game is really that fast--at all, play 1. It's slow. More Mario like.

As for 3D sonic games, I really can't recommend any. Even the ones I like. SA1 has aged poorly, SA2 has a lot of slog levels, generations has poor classic levels, heroes is too grindy, etc. But if you want to try, I'd go with Adventure 2 to try.

I'll die on a hill over S3&K being the only reason to care about the franchise, at all. The level design in that game is top notch.

I love the aesthetics, music and whole idea of time travel in Sonic CD but every time I play it I'm just wishing I was playing 1, 2 or 3K. The level design choices just drag the whole package down

Unrepentant Sonic 3d fan here to draw derision from all concerned. That said as far as I am concerned the series ended in the 16 bit era.

s3k is good, only real problem with it is THAT FUCKING BARREL PART

everyone overhypes the barrel lol I got stuck at it at like 4 years old yeah, but all you have to do is basically mash buttons around, it's not the worst

adventure 1(if you play it on steam use this mod: https://www.moddb.com/mods/sadx-dreamcast-conversion) sonic 06 because it's so bad that it just has to be experienced(dont recommend the pc port for a first play-through as it gets rid of all the bugs, not sure how well it runs on xenia/rpcs3) (2/2)

I’ve also done Black Night- got stuck at the start
And I’ve done unleashed- the wii version is bad but it runs terrible on RPCS3

yeah unleashed ran terribly on original hardware, it chugs on my xbox
