Meanwhile I’m looking to learn and master another language. Duolingo doesn’t go very... in-depth. Or teach connotations even

sadly ime duo is by far the best. If you don't like their mobile app, use the browser version on your phone. I have it set up so that I have a the browser version as a shortcut on my homescreen - that way I get a full screen experience.

What’s a general time frame I should expect before I can really... learn enough of a language to use it? (Duolingo)
I don’t mean to speak/read it perfectly- but just enough for general use.
Also-
I feel like Duolingo doesn’t really work well for the way I learn

I did duolingo of chinese for a few years very off and on. I could start to have a pretty basic convo maybe 5-6 months in. It's more about consistency than anything. And learning vocab in the early stages can be more important than grammar. Which language are you learning?

Looking to learn German and casual Japanese-
Not at the same time. I’m currently working on Japanese for a few reasons-

I can teach you the case system that German uses; I can also give you my Hiragana and Katakana charts if you want.

Japanese is one of the languages that are notoriously hard to get started on due to the writing systems. I've heard duo has a pretty good kana system tho. Also, you should search for some anki decks to help with daily vocab memorization.

It’s funny- I mastered English much better than... everyone I know- but out of all the times I’ve tried, I’ve never been able to learn another language ;O;
...
Probably been doing it wrong- but still x3

learning a language is like working out. If you did 1 hour every day in earnest you would become a master. But also like the gym finding that daily motivation can be pretty tough.

It helps when you can learn in school. I learnt French cause of Canada. But I also did 4 years of Latin and a semester of German.

One last question- is it bad to use English while learning another language? When I try to learn, I naturally try to match words of other languages with English words.

It's sort of a necessity at first

You usually can't learn in the language you are learning until you have been studying at least a few years.

I learned Greek for 5-6 years before I could really try to learn in the language.

Latin is easier to learn than Greek since it uses the Roman Alphabet.

Not to mention the verbs are much more straight forward in Latin. The Greek verbs have 6 principal parts as opposed to 4 and they are really wacky sometimes.
