That is one reason why I prefer heating (and cooking) with wood.
Power outage is still bad.

I have gas for cooking fortunately. My heater is also gas, but requires electricity to start. A shame

Couldn't they have included some sort of purely mechanical starter, a crank or something?

A surprising number of basically stone age solutions these days require electricity in order to function.

Friend has a fully automated pellet burning heater, it keeps constant room temperature, tells you when it's low on fuel, has a start and stop timer, you can check the status or turn it on or off over the internet... but if the power is out, it stops dead. It's basically a fire pit, but you can't just chuck some wood and a match in there, it requires the power grid to work.
Meh.

* Neighbors garage door: Electric – no mechanical backup.
* You mentioned pellet technology. Central heating (oil, gas, pellet) doesn't work without electricity – not only for starting, also the water pump.
* Gas station → Try refueling on blackout. Old fuel dispensers had emergency hand pumps.
Please don't make me even think about so-called "smart home"

Ancient Rome had floating water – admittedly not as convenient as water pipes under pressure delivering water UP a building. But it worked. Our modern water system will always fail soon after blackout… but not living in a city I know where to find good water.
