my PC, despite being OP in 2009, can't run Windows 8 or above. Linux really was the only option.

I don't know man, maybe it's time for an upgrade.
I too had a Linux phase, but the overall relative unfriendliness of the OS and not being able to play a lot of games properly had me go back to Windows in like a year.
