From what I know, I don't think it's necessary to unlock the system updates for vWii Compat Title Installer, but you never know. I think the best option is to enable them temporarily when you need to fix your vWii and then to disable them again.
If your virtual Wii (vWii) is corrupted, bricks on launch, or fails to boot and you don't have a nand backup, you can completely restore it to factory settings without needing a prior NAND backup.
