    I guess so. That's how the reporting system has worked since the Wii U. Get enough, and you're banned. But this goes for the people who were playing as an octoling early, in public modes like turf, ranked and league.

    Recently, people have been getting permanent bans from Splatoon 2 online due to reports via the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app. Beware, and remember to keep things like octoling save edits in private battles to avoid getting reported.

    I'm talking about Splatoon 2 itself, not the firmware version of the switch. Even on the latest firmware, with new every update to Splatoon you are required to install the update, otherwise you cannot play online. But, that is still true.

    The reason why you wouldn't be able to play online without updating is because the new updates contain new weapons and game patches, etc.
