At least its mostly just petty squabbling with gamers. Just look at sports fans, especially English football fans. It often ends up with actual fights, destruction of property,etc,etc.
I'm guessing its more to do with the worry that running homebrew code in retail mode could lead to an exploit being discovered. While it sucks to lose retail mode options at least they do offer a mode that can run homebrew officially, unlike everyone else.

Emudeck basically gathers together and uses a bunch of different software to make emulation on the steam deck easier. One of the applications it uses is emulation station. So improvements to ES will filter through to emudeck as emudeck gets updated.
Retroarch is a frontend but only for its own cores. As a front end for configuring a bunch of your emulation easily its great but for actually playing/selecting/finding games its kind of clunky and ugly and lacks a lot of the customisation. That is all more down to personal taste though, if all...
