    Definitely NOT optional.....you MUST go through the Modify 4.2 steps in order to actually softmod your Wii.

    I softmodded my virgin Wii on 4.0E last week using xzxero' supa dupa excellent guide. I had boot2v3 which allowed me to install Bootmii as Boot2. A couple days ago my 6 year old nephew updated the Wii to 4.2 by selecting the Wii Shop Channel (I shouldn't have left the wireless connection on!)...
