    Another question in the same vein: If I were to copy my save files from my SD card, they would not work with a retail cartridge? If so, that kind of blows.

    You could always wait for sales. I don't think 3DSXLs depreciate in value very quickly. Anyway, the whole 2012 thing is somewhat inaccurate. The serial number on the side of the box is what you want. Mine was SW12043XXXXX and it came with 4.4. The lower the number, the lower the firmware.

    I found a 3DSXL with 4.4 firmware really easily at Walmart, which was actually the first place I looked. I've also considered selling my 3DSXL and my Gateway, but I've always been too lazy to look into it. I would consider selling it to you if there was a reliable way to do it. I'm also unsure...
