    I ended up soldering the battery directly to the board with the 3 wires and that ended up solving the issue (no short to ground) thank you for the help!

    Thanks it most definitely could be touching ground, the middle pin (sense) of mine has the copper pad ripped off the board so I had a "jumper cable" soldered from the middle grey wire to another point on the board that was connected to the original.
