You can cut the GUI in half by either removing or turning everything in the blue bubbles into tool tips.
The way your mock-up is now, there’s too much text.
I had received the same error, and didn’t think much about it. Sure enough, it worked properly despite that message.
I also had no issue using USB-C -> USB-C on my 2017 MBP.
