    Probably op doesnt need an answer anymore but some ppl online may do. Today I tried it with my normal 3ds, same situation as op and battery was inflated. Short answer is no you cannot use it if a battery is not inserted in the 3ds. My 3ds was booted up for minutes with the dangerous battery...
