    Did no one ever make 720p TVs?

    This might depend on your region, but there were some early LCD TVs in Europe which were released with true 720p panels. E.g. Samsung released some 22 inch models. There were actually quite a number of different panel resolutions (e.g. Sharp used 960x540 etc.) . It didn't take long till 768p...
