    Interesting. I have never tested gcn games so I didn't know that. I think a "gaming mode" may fix it, maybe creating a gaming session (xserver + retroarch) instead of gnome. Dunno how hard is it, though.

    It does means you should use wharever switch you better. Are you using it as a complete OS or for emulators only? OS: no doubt, go for Ubuntu. Emulators only: are you using wireless joycon and/or docked mode? Yes: Go for Ubuntu. No: Go for Lakka. Simple like that.
