You aren't gonna get comparable performance out of a NUC without an external GPU, and buying both of those new at current prices would put you well above $1000. There's a reason they had to custom design the Steam Machine, after all.

Honestly had the ram and SSD prike hike not occurred i could see this being $700-800. But $1050 USD and $1100 with a controller for base model isn't totally out of the realm of what people are willing the throw down for an entry level PC these...

Well that is a part of it yes. Transportation of the product uses a ton of fuels and many other petrochemicals are used to make plastics and such. It has much less of an effect than say the RAM shortages but it very much does have an effect...
