It appears to be a community of linux users trying hacks on their wii... can anyone give me a little more detailed information? i've looked through their site, and alot of it looks interesting(just way over my head to understand)

I think they are pretty much waiting for a solution for running homebrew to appear.

The site explains everything and is even in a Wiki format, you should be able to understand what their project is about from the FAQ, what exactly dont you get?

The benfits of running linux on any console are many, especialy from a homebrew developers perspective, and for the average user potentialy opens up a whole array of new possibilities. Linux is perfect as its so versatile.
