I'm having this issue when re-hacking my Wii. I used ModMii to download all the necessary files that I needed including both USB Loader GX and WiiFlow. It came with a USB Loader forwarder WAD, and I installed it but it doesn't correctly boot to the USB Loader app on my USB. I tried a separate forwarder WAD for Wiiflow and it does the same thing. Forwarders work fine when the apps are on my SD, but then they won't let me select the USB Drive to see my games. How can I direct these forwarder to the apps folder on my USB Drive?

The forwarder that comes with modmii supports sd and usb. It could be that the hdd isn't formatted properly (I.e. Multiple partitions, and the usb loader app not saved to first partition). It could also be that your drive is slow to initialize. It could also be that you don't have the hdd plugged into port 0 (the one nearest the edge)

For now I'm going to assume that you are trying to use 1 single fat32 partition on your hdd (correct me if this isn't the case). See if the HBC can read and launch apps from usb (if u have both an SD and usb inserted, hit 1 to be able to select which one the hbc should list). If this doesn't work, I'm not surprised that the forwarder doesn't work either (although the forwarder supports ntfs and ext formats whereas the hbc only supports fat32). So first confirm you can launch apps off your USB via the hbc before trying to use a forwarder.

It could also be that your hdd just isn't compatible. Or that it's formatted as gpt instead instead of mbr

Edit: did u use modmii's main wizard? Post a Syscheck plz

Ill post a syscheck when i get home, but you were correct about fat32 1 partition. I can confirm that i can switch to usb in hbc and load apps from there. The hdd I'm using is a old laptop hdd in an enclosure, but should the cable I be using be a y-cable?

Also the apps work when run through either SD or USB, but the forwarders only work if the apps are on my SD.

Edit: Okay so big dumb moment, used my alternate partition manager on my external hdd and it wasn't the primary one, and had an old ntfs partition still on it. So it'll probably work now.

Edit 2: Yeah that was the problem this whole time. Now I need to find a way to keep my BootMii loader files on my SD without it always going to it at startup.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
