No one took my suggestion?

It costs cheaper, plus, it's from WD, 1TB, looks great, and is very durable.

# Heavy, solid build, almost bullet-proof enclosure.
# 8"x4"x1" rectangular prism (these are not exact measurements but I'm confident it's close.
# USB port for data transfer, cable included.
# External power supply.
# Silent run - you can't hear it spinning unless you place it close to your ear.
# Cool - after one night of uninterrupted operation it was barely warmer than room temperature.
# Not a speed demon but I backed up 50GB in something like 20-30 minutes.
# Formatted as FAT32.
# Comes with no software but it was instantly recognized by both Vista and my PS3 (more about that later)
# There is no manual to speak of - and no manual is needed.
# One year warranty.
# 30-day free tech support during the warranty period where the clock starts running after the first call to WD.
# Lacks the (to me annoying) carnival lights that some other drives have these days - only one blue LED, on the back, blinks when read/writes are performed.

I own that one, and use it for usb loader.

I tested it with the whole 1TB formated to WBFS and had no problems.

ppl say WD spindown after 10 minutes and cant be changed, but I havent experience any spindown. I used HDDscan to check and result was the spindown is disabled. So all good.

So this is a good one to use. I must say, transfering games from pc to the disk takes some time.

are there any usb external hdd's that don't require an ac adapter?

Every single 3.5" drive requires an AC adapter. 3.5" drives need 12V and 5V. USB can only supply 5V. The current draw of a 3.5" drive would violate USB specs.

Just about every 2.5" drive I've seen can be USB powered. They only include the AC adapter for people who have laptops or other USB hubs that cannot supply the required current.

The Wii's USB ports can drive every 2.5" drive I threw at it.
