I've had this flashcart for years but I haven't used it much. I've noticed that most of the newer games don't work on this flashcart. Is there anything I can with the DSX or do I need to get a different flashcart?

You can probably play many games with it if you patch them like twice or three times manually. One tip: some games should be compatible as soon as you apply the ARM7 patch. Just google it to find out more.
