Web browers: Google Chrome approaching 30% market share worldwide

Recent reports indicate that Google Chrome now absorbs nearly 30% of the web browser market share worldwide (source). Its main competitors are Internet Explorer with a little over 52% all versions included, and Firefox with now less than 12%.

In fact, if you exclude Chinese web users (who are usually stuck with old pirated versions of Windows and awful IE-based browsers) the numbers are even more impressive:
1. Google Chrome: > 52%
2. Internet Explorer: > 15%
3. Firefox: > 15%
4. Safari: > 9%
(source)

Things have changed a lot over the past 10 years and it's impressive to realize how much Chrome has changed our browsing habits. What is your opinion on the subject? Do you use Google Chrome yourself? What is the best web browser?

I use Chrome on pretty much all my PCs. Don't care about RAM usage since every PC I consistently use has 4GB+ of RAM and it has little to no impact on system performance, at least in my 4 or so years of experience using it. Dunno why anyone else has a problem, unless they're going around trying to open 50 tabs and running 12 VMs and trying to render 4K video all at the same time.

Though once Microsoft Edge gets addon support I might switch to that, it's quite a nice browser upgrade especially compared to its predecessor.

I have like 5-6 tabs opened all the time on my shitty laptop, I never had a single RAM issue lol.

That orange mark on the bottom of the memory column concerns me :P It uses more memory than most other browsers...
180MB over 3Gb isn't going to kill my computer :P

And I have a lot of stuff running in background too.

63% overall used, not that bad actually xD

I know it won't *kill* your computer, but at least for me (8GB) Firefox in general performs better and so do other applications without Chrome.
I believe you are right.

But I won't change something that is already working fine for me :)

I never really used firefox, I dunno if there's much advantages, apart from RAM usage reduction :P

If it ain't broke, don't fix it I guess. But chrome was pretty broke for me, and switching to firefox really helped.

I use Chrome (personally) for one very simple reason, it has built-in flash support (and I can't for the life of me figure out how to install Chromium on F22, never mind, they fixed the issue that was stopping me), anyways my entire school is required to run Chrome because, Google. Whenever I start Firefox it runs far slower than chrome does for whatever reason, heck I can start chrome within 3 seconds while it takes over 10 to fully load FF.

I use Chrome. It's not perfect, and I don't personally go around advocating for it, but it's a heck of a lot better than IE. Ironically, I used Firefox before using Chrome, and while I don't completely detest it, I just grew to enjoy my experience with Chrome as I kept using it more frequently. And yes, the add-ons for Chrome are great. ;)

How were you able to determine the % after factoring out the Chinese users? Its cool that Google is making its way to the top, wish them the best as they are always trying to make progress in advancing there company and not sit idle.
StatCounter can't collect data from China, they're blocked there, so their stats dont include chinese users
apparently this isn't the case for Netmarketshare

I am on Chrome 45 which got updated just yesterday morning.
Are you maybe registered on the developper channel or something?
yeah, I just realized I was updating "google-chrome-unstable" and seeing as how there's no actually 'unstable' version listed here, I'm probably installing the dev version.

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
