I absolutely adored this game as a kid, and had such a great time going back through it again to make it just as beautiful as It was when I saw it.
By the way if there is a character in the world you want to play, you can! During character creation, highlight the name icon and Quickly press L1, R2, R1, L2, L1, R2 Square and right on the d-pad to select any character you want.
