I'm looking to buy a new 2ds at walmart. I heard the Mario kart 7 bundle is firmware 6.0.0 but does anyone know what the super Mario Bros 2 is?

That's a long-running series, most of them were made in the 8.1 days (together with the Tomodachi Life ones) but they continued to be made for years AFAIK - in fact http://twinfinite.net/2017/07/nintendo-2ds-gets-a-new-super-mario-bros-2-bundle-in-north-america/ claims it was remade this very august

also heeeee, "new 2ds"

That bundle wasn't sold in the US until last august. It will be >= 11.4

His best bet is a mario7 bundle but it may be 11.4 or higher as well.

OP: If you can find one that has a black front (and blue/red sides) that would stand a much higher chance of being <11.4. Hard to find though. May have to go online.

Thanks. So is that the only way to find one that is low enough to use CFW on? I'm obviously new to the 3ds/2ds for moding. A 2ds is just the cheaper way for me to go right now.

you can hack any 3ds model right now, but you need a Ds flashcart. The free method is for <= 11.3 only
Check 3ds.guide for "ntrboot" and learn about it.
