Hacking Update or not to 5.0? The great Question.

Standby on my old Wii made the system so hot to the touch that I had to disable it. Don't know if that happened to anyone else, but that's my experience. Seems kind of counterproductive to leave a system on standby if all it does is cause wear and tear, as you stated.

Some Wii models had their GPU get fried by keeping it on, I think it's useless and doesn't really save much time on the Wii. With the Wii U, no, not doing it.

My personal thought on this matter...
I already screwed it up and Updated to v5.0 just a week or so before the exploit was released, so I am not in a good spot right now.
As for updating to upcoming system upgrades...

I already disabled Stand-By today, and I will not update to any further version UNLESS Nintendo brings up something good.
One of the things that might make me update even if that costs me a possible future Homebrew in my Wii U are the following:
1) Gamepad compatibility for vWii. Being able to use the Gamepad in vWii as if it were a Classic Controller connected to a Wiimote.
2) Nintendo DS compatibility for eShop. We know this is coming but so far not a single DS game has been released.
3) Flash Player support for the Browser. I know this might be stupid, but this is the only thing that is really keeping me from switching entirely to my Wii U and leave my laptop alone.

I will stay on v5.0 for now. If Homebrew ever comes, I will wait patiently for either a N64 and/or DS emulator in the scene before I hack Wii U (since I already have vWii hacked).
It might take a LONG time before that, but at least I will be safe for now... Or not? XD

"Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain?" is a DS game and it is available as a free download on the european wiiu eshop ^^ you turn around your wiiu gamepad and then this is your NDS ^^
I know, this game isn't really hard to emulate, as it is very simple and basic, but technically, it is still a NDS game on the WiiU

I was one of those who had this happen to my Wii. My Wii is still functional but has random shimmering artifacts that appear while doing anything other than playing GameCube games. I am not taking that risk with the Wii U this time around.

I thought I had blocked the update servers, but must not have done it correctly as it still downloaded, but I just shutdown when it wants to apply the update. Currently on 4.1.0 and will remain there for a while unless there's no need to

Thanks for the info but I am going to stay at 4.1 and see where things go. Plus I pre-ordered the mod chip

I updated to 5.0 because the mario kart 8 deal was just too good, had to get Windwaker HD before ninty decides to release another system software, also used the opportunity to get some vc goodies from the eshop.... blocked urls again and now Im patiently waiting for some homebrew.... by the time, that there is actual usable homebrew, someone surely will have found the binaries for the exploit to work on 5.0 again
will take months for anything to release anyways

It is. Only if you don't got something to enjoy much as you can like a hacked PS3 or 3DS or free Wii games.
But this may be like PS3/3DS never a hacked update above 3.55 or 4.5.
You trust now is only for the WiiU key if they don't need also 4.1. The price is besides bit to much it may be worth the wait.

do you realize in standby mode your wiiu is practically still on that's why it loads quicker in quick boot. and if it's still on it's still using more power etc. dunno bout you but i don't like leaving my consoles on all time

Considering that Wii U uses a small amount of energy consumption I'm actually okay because I tend to boot it up every now and then.

no with the 3ds and ps3 it was different
there the exploits were fixed
5.0 didnt fix it, they just need to find the "entry point", because some binaries got changed around
it is still there, just needs to be found
