Turn your Xbox One into a dev kit for free, starting today!

images

Today, Microsoft fulfilled one of their promises. Xbox One owners can now turn their consoles into dev kits. Developer mode is not yet final. The final and full release is expected sometime this summer.

Turning your console into a dev kit is free of charge however, users will need to pay an additional $19 to get a Dev Center account which gives them full access to the true capabilities of developer mode.

Through developer mode, users can build, test, and experiment with Universal Windows Program development.

The content you're going to be creating isn't going to be games though, it's only going to be apps for the Xbox One. Only time will tell if Microsoft will allow us to create games

Even if dev mode is available to the public, it's advised for most people to just wait for the final release
The said preview is going to have issues. That is expected due to it being only a preview. It also only gives access to 448 MB of the 8 GB RAM the Xbox One has. When the final release arrives, expect to be able to use 1 GB of RAM.

There are also several requirements to get access to dev mode:
  • Must be a member of the Windows Insider Program
  • Must be a member of ID@Xbox
  • PC must be running Windows 10
  • A wired connection between your PC and Xbox One
  • Have the latest builds of Visual Studio 2015 on your PC
  • Must have latest build/updates of Windows installed
  • 30 GB of free storage on your Xbox One
Do note that when you've finally activated dev mode. You may run into problems running retail games. Discretion is advised.

Sounds a bit hampered, not to mention something you should really only do if you have a second xbox one to dedicate to it. Don't think I'd mess with it if I could only afford the one.

EDIT: oh, fake, lol

Um, there was a "hack" like this a while ago that actually did cause bricks.

@chaosrunner - This is official. You're confusing this with the "hack"/"mod" that came out a while back.
Hack != Official developed by Microsoft. So no, an official developer mode by Microsoft would never put the console in a irreversible unbootable state ;)

Yet it's easy to get confused with a headline like "Turn your Xbone into a devkit, for free, starting today!" with no indication that it's actually an official method. (The articles that showed off the hack/mod used a similar headline.)

A much better headline would've been "Microsoft releases official app that turns your Xbone into a devkit." (It's clear and straight to the point.)

@Xdqwerty No you heard wrong, and don't believe till you experience yourself. Fallout 4 is one of my favorite games of all time. Yes it had issues early on, esp with older hardware like the xbox1, but it is awesome, esp now being 4k on Series S/X or PS5

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea you right there, fallout 76 was a letdown, but it not that bad now, they have fixed slot of issues they had at launch. Biggest issue with Fallout 76 is its a pay to advance further type of game, which sucks
