I don't think I've ever been so disappointed and perturbed by a single film. I love the source material and everyone involved. I like Elba, Margot Robbie's Quinn is spot on even if uninspired at times, was hoping Cena turned out to be a good actor (Spoiler alert, he's not). I've also enjoyed Gunn's other films and he does all his normal tricks here, great visuals and sound track.
But I don't know how anyone in the creative process could be this tone deaf. Comedy can be violent, dark etc. all things I normally enjoy but the overall tone of this film is just highly unlikable. There is nothing to enjoy in this movie.
The violence and traumatic themes and the dramatic character arcs go way to dark to accompany the humor, and the humor falls flat after the dredges through emotional abuse and dramatically portrayed real life trauma.
Have you ever wanted to watch serious depictions of over doses and abuse wrapped up with "Starfish" puns? Well that sums up this whole tone deaf affair.
It's to dark to enjoy the comedy and lighter elements and too campy to engage the dramatic elements with an unhealthy dose of over the top gore for good measure. It's trying to be three different films and does them all poorly.
And you don't waste Michael Rooker this way.
AVOID.
