The Sega Dreamcast turns 20 years old in the west

Dreamcast-Console-Set.jpg

Exactly 20 years ago today, the SEGA Dreamcast launched on store shelves across North America. When it released, the Dreamcast was an impressive console for many reasons--it officially brought SEGA's flagship series, Sonic the Hedgehog, into 3D with its 9/9/99 launch title of Sonic Adventure. There were other standout titles as well, such as Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Skies of Arcadia and Soul Calibur. And even to this day, you can still feel the effects of some of the Dreamcast's best games, with the upcoming Shenmue 3 finally continuing the tale of the series, and even having the collector's edition reference its platform of origin, by coming in a Dreamcast-styled case. Phantasy Star Online 2, a sequel to the 2000-released RPG Phantasy Star Online, which started on the Dreamcast, is also getting a western release, sometime next year. Of course, the Dreamcast is also remembered for being SEGA's final foray into the hardware market, before they bowed out and became a third party software company. Regardless of the highs and lows, the Dreamcast is sure to be fondly remembered by many. What's your favorite memory of the SEGA Dreamcast?

Oh, the memories... the big ones in my house were Soul Calibur, Virtua Tennis, and Project Justice and I guess the fact that I still had friends willing to come over and play them. Lots of other hits though, both single and multiplayer.

You should care its part of gaming history and had a good year of enjoyment for many gamers and I'd say a contender for best start up sound of a console - every true video gamer on the planet wants to see sega back in the console making world

Got one for 8 bucks on a flea market years ago already, it didn't work but luckily was easy to fix so through that i learned about Dreamcast piracy, it was pretty interesting.

Damn. I still remember when my older brother got his first DC (he had two for some reason. I didn't complain), he had it set up on some mini TV (the kind that could be plugged into the cigarette lighter in a car) in his room (can't remember why he didn't use a normal TV). He'd get a lot of the classics like 3rd Strike, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 "I'm gonna take you for a ride" New Age of Heroes, Capcom Vs. SNK 2 on a backup disc from eBay (he had quite a lot of these that he got off of eBay back in the day), both Power Stones, Jet Set Radio, both Crazy Taxis, Sonic Adventure, the whole package!

Now, if only my hacked Switch could play DC/NAOMI games reliably...

Love, love, love the Dreamcast library, yet I've never played a real Dreamcast myself. Only dabbled in ports of games to other systems and quite a lot of emulation. I have a real fondness for the system nonetheless. For a time, my PS2 was more of a Dreamcast than a PS2 itself.

Crazy Taxi, REZ, Space Channel 5 Part 2, Skies of Arcadia, Ikaruga and Marvel vs Capcom 2 are among my all-time favorites. Stuff like House/Typing of the Dead 2, Power Stone and Dynamite Deka 2 are quirky, weird titles I love. The Dreamcast is a fascinating system beyond the obvious recommendations.

The game was custom-tailored for fast, arcade styled games, which ended up being both its blessing and its curse. The player profile of the time asked for something else. Unless history was rewritten, victory would have been impossible. I don't care. It was the best at what it did anyway.

My favorite memory of the Dreamcast was making my own NES disk (not the emulator) had like 200 NES games the box art and the manuals in this really cool front end. Way back before front ends for emulation was a thing. Might be the first? Anyway I didn't really play it much but I really enjoyed putting it together.

Edit: please note I didn't make anything just used the tools the DC community had made at the time, also the emulation was perfect for NES the reason I didn't really play it was the Dreamcast controllers kind of where not the best for that kind of thing.

Somethings maybe, but drives are rated in hours, so most likely many hours already on them. I just don't trust em for data. Maybe a used(renewed) car or something be ok tho.
