Hardware Switch updates are now necessary for online play.

I've made this thread because it has finally happened, and some of you may not know it. I've tried to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online while being on 2.0, and I've got a message saying that I need to update to the newest version in order to play. Basically updating is now necessary.

2.2 may be fine, iirc they usually allow you to be one (maybe two) firmware versions out of date.

If you block the update URLs, the Switch will play online since it has no idea if 2.0 is the latest or not.

It really seems obvious that they'd do it, but they haven't forced the updates for almost 4 months. Maybe the 3.0 update has patched a big exploit, I don't know. But it's kind of weird they haven't done it for so long.

I find it weird that the 2.3 update came out not long ago, and then we got 3.0 with a shitload of features a few days later. Like, what kind of fuckery is this?

What's weird about it to me is it seems like they have two teams working on updates, or one team under tramendous pressure and speed.
