You should definitely update if you want to play TOTK. If I check my xci file, I get this.

Code:
The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom[0100F2C0115B6000][v0].xci
├ Title ID: 0100F2C0115B6000
├ Base Title ID: 0100F2C0115B6000
├ Title Name: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
├ Display Version: 1.0.0
├ Version: 0
├ Latest Version:
├ System Update:
├ System Version: 15.0.0
├ Application Version:
├ Masterkey: 14
├ Title Key:
├ Publisher: Nintendo
├ Languages: en-US,en-GB,ja,fr,de,es-419,es,it,nl,fr-CA,pt,ru,ko,zh-TW,zh-CN
├ Filename: /home/Documents/The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom[0100F2C0115B6000][v0].xci
├ Filesize: 16.33 GB
├ Type: Base
├ Distribution: Cartridge
├ Structure: Scene
├ Signature: Passed
├ Permission: Safe

So it needs at least firmware 15, and if you want to use updates to the game, then it's probably bumped to firmware 16. Game works fine for me, with updates too, on firmware 16.0.2.

Can it boot HOS (normal firmware) without issues? If so, you're ok. CFW is just a few files and folders on your SD card. You possibly mixed old and new files in a failed attempt to update. Delete both bootloader and atmosphere folders from your SD card, and then just re-install the latest Hekate and Atmosphere. Inject the fusee payload from RCM (if that's the exploit you're using) to launch CFW. If more problems arise, try asking in the noobs thread.
