Interesting response, although a bit confused.
No doubt about it, if I could somehow take the chemistry route and end up as a dentist, you bet I'd definitely do that. When you first mentioned "A merger of the two perhaps an option?" I thought you were at first hinting at a DMD/PhD program. Looked into such programs and they are oral biology on steroids for 8 additional years of schooling. No way. Would you mind clarifying your post a bit? Are you saying that I can go for a PhD in chem, but enter a lab specific to materials in the dental field and yet still end up as a dentist?
Dentistry pays a shit-ton more than chemistry.
Salary wise. Dentistry rocks. Its just I am having a hard time gauging my interest in the profession. I am trying to find out whether the reason I am still holding on to it at this point is for the money or because a gut feeling is at least telling me to give a shot in hope that I find the profession as enjoyable as I think it is.Easily Dentistry. No question about it. The average dentist makes 172K per year. If you've been interested in it forever, this is an easy choice if you ask me. My brother is studying Bio and Chem at UoP and he tells me he is struggling to find a job that involves his area of study.
Interest in Dentistry + Hella good salary = good life
^^Just adding this cause he's right
I just came from the Chemical industry. It's not looking good. Most of the lab techs were from the Pharmaceutical industry after it crashed, and now the oil industry has crashed. Luckily I was involved in the technology side of things so I can easily go somewhere else.
Run. Run you fools!
My brother is studying Chemistry and Biology and he tells me it is very difficult to find a job in his field. That may or may not sway your opinion, but if I were you, I wouldn't chance it. The salary is guaranteed to be amazing if you choose dentistry, but if you choose Chemistry, you may not get the desired paySalary wise. Dentistry rocks.
