Interesting response, although a bit confused.

No doubt about it, if I could somehow take the chemistry route and end up as a dentist, you bet I'd definitely do that. When you first mentioned "A merger of the two perhaps an option?" I thought you were at first hinting at a DMD/PhD program. Looked into such programs and they are oral biology on steroids for 8 additional years of schooling. No way. Would you mind clarifying your post a bit? Are you saying that I can go for a PhD in chem, but enter a lab specific to materials in the dental field and yet still end up as a dentist?

I have no idea on the requirements to be a dentist stateside, and what I do know of more general medicine and the differences in training means I am not going to speculate. That said I very much doubt there is a straight chemistry route (all the dentists I ever spoke to were pretty hot on facial muscles, bones, nerves, pharma/anaesthetics... and no chemist I know would know all that from that alone). It might be that there is a way (you can become a computer coder through maths, electronics, straight up computing and even game design nowadays) but I don't know it and is not likely to be something I do know, hopefully the person you referenced in the OP knows their stuff if they are saying that is the only way.
Mine was purely a suggestion that you could bias a chemistry phd towards some kind of dentistry application as a merger of interests. If you did still desire some kind of patient contact then I don't know what dental nursing or whatever the equivalent of a dental hygienist works like over there but you could knock one of those out on a more part time basis and end up dual skilled after a fashion.

Easily Dentistry. No question about it. The average dentist makes 172K per year. If you've been interested in it forever, this is an easy choice if you ask me. My brother is studying Bio and Chem at UoP and he tells me he is struggling to find a job that involves his area of study.

Interest in Dentistry + Hella good salary = good life

Dentistry pays a shit-ton more than chemistry.

^^Just adding this cause he's right

I just came from the Chemical industry. It's not looking good. Most of the lab techs were from the Pharmaceutical industry after it crashed, and now the oil industry has crashed. Luckily I was involved in the technology side of things so I can easily go somewhere else.

Run. Run you fools!

Salary wise. Dentistry rocks. Its just I am having a hard time gauging my interest in the profession. I am trying to find out whether the reason I am still holding on to it at this point is for the money or because a gut feeling is at least telling me to give a shot in hope that I find the profession as enjoyable as I think it is.

Haha. I laughed at this. My professor tells me again and again how much uncertainty there is in the chemical field. So I totally see where you are coming from.

I'm a physician and I could not care less about this shit... all the jokes aside, you need to take in account about your future plans and how your profession attaches to it. I would go to dentistry (altough I despite them like any good physician).

Dentistry without a doubt. Chemistry is a specialized field and you will always be retraining and moving to where a job is available.

Dentists make bank, many do better than general practice doctors and you can do it anywhere.

Unless you have some drive/motivation to make some breakthrough in chemistry. Dentistry is far more stability, less stress & better money.

Do what you want to do, simple. Unfortunately, money and having a comfortable living means precisely nothing if you dislike your job. Do you have a passion for Chemistry that encompasses your interest in dentistry?

As others have said, Chemistry is a specialised field that can branch into several areas, such as microbiology. You have to be prepared to tread in the ground that others have already filled many times over. You need to do something very special within chemistry to be recognised for it and make much money. Unless you get a good job within Pharmaceuticals, it's a tough job to get into. One of my friends is a Chemist at Pfizer which he makes a respectable wage at. I have a massive interest in Evolutionary Biology, but my interests in both art and graphic design were more ingrained.

My brother is studying Chemistry and Biology and he tells me it is very difficult to find a job in his field. That may or may not sway your opinion, but if I were you, I wouldn't chance it. The salary is guaranteed to be amazing if you choose dentistry, but if you choose Chemistry, you may not get the desired pay
