TL;DR Genuine Emerald cartridge, dead battery, has saved fine the entire time I've had it. Last successful save was a couple days ago, and hasn't left my closed case since. No history of problems whatsoever. Failed to save today in my Game Boy Player, which hasn't had problems saving either.
What can I do to, well, save my save?

For more detail:
Hi all, been playing on my Pokemon Emerald cartridge—I'm very confident it's real, as it has the four gold rectangles on the back of the motherboard and has transferred to Pal Park.
Today I was playing on my Game Boy Player (GC) and went to save my game. Player is NTSC-J, Emerald is NTSC-U, never had compatibility problems in the past. Standard procedure, all stock official hardware, nothing out of the ordinary.
Today, however, it took abnormally long.
After about 10 minutes of sitting on "SAVING... DO NOT TURN OFF THE POWER" (1st attachment) it changed to the "Save failed" screen. (2nd attachment)
30 minutes and counting here.

My #1 priority is to keep my save file intact—I have no save backups. All good if it reverts to my last save.

All advice or help threads I can find are on emulator, and solutions have been no help for official hardware. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If it is a genuine cartridge, the error is indicative of the save memory (that stores the save data) inside the cartridge is starting to fail. There is not much you can do about this, this screen shows up when bad blocks are detected on the cartridge's flash chip.

Did it give any additional message afterwards? In some cases it is able to re-try the save on this screen.

If you're still able to load the save file after reloading the catridge, ensure the cartridge pins are clean and consider looking into backing up the save file with a Nintendo DS & Flashcart running the homebrew GBA Backup Tool or an external USB Cartridge reader such as the GBxCart RW.

Maybe try and dump the save using your DS or a GBxCart, then re-built it using a working Pokemon Emerald savefile (ensuring you have made a backup beforehand). There's a guide that somebody made that can help you out, if the save corrupt message occurs: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-fix-all-save-problems-for-pokemon-games-vc-gba.433266/

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
