Well, This is Strange :glare:. I have 2 3ds, One is the New 3DS XL Galaxy and the other is a New 2DS XL Black-Blue of my girlfriend, Both have the same Firmware (11.8), both have the same FBA Neo Geo archives (1.6.7, the last versions dont work well) and...
Only in the N2DSXL Works :ohnoes:
In the N3DSXL when I Choose Load Archive and the right core... It's just say: Failed to load content in Yellow on The Bottom of the Top Screen
Try to Load MS 5, KOF 2000, Last Blade and all have the same reply in the N3DSXL: Failed to load content :gun:, EXCEPT in the N2DSXL because they run well:hateit:

Anybody knows why?

PD: I try other versions, dont work either

There are bugs in the RetroArch v1.7.5 stable release for the 3DS. When tested in the Windows version of RetroArch, the two cores available for the 3DS build that should be compatible playing Neo Geo games are 1) FB Alpha 2012 and 2) FB Alpha 2012 Neo Geo.

***

I) Testing done with both *.3dsx and *.cia of RetroArch v1.7.5.

II) Hardware specs and setup:
- New 3DS XL (native USA region)
- Sys 11.8.0-41U
- original factory Lexar 4 GB micro SD card formatted FAT32 + 32 KB cluster size
- CFW setup: Luma3DS v9.1, fastboot3ds v1.1 stable, GodMode9 v1.7.1.

III) Tests conducted with MAME .158 ROMs set:
  • The King of Fighters 2000 (NGM-2570) (NGH-2570) - kof2000.zip (81.53 MB)
  • The Last Blade / Bakumatsu Roman - Gekka no Kenshi (NGM-2340) - lastblad.zip (26.31 MB)
  • Metal Slug 5 (NGM-2680) - mslug5.zip (81.16 MB)
Neo Geo bios used:
  • Neo-Geo - neogeo.zip (1.49 MB)

***

All four (4) archived files were placed in the same folder directory on the SD card. Location does not explicitly matter. Files were placed in both:
  • sdmc:/neogeo/
    • kof2000.zip
    • lastblad.zip
    • mslug5.zip
    • neogeo.zip

  • sdmc:/roms/neogeo/
    • ...
    • etc.

***

These were the behaviors observed using RetroArch:

FB Alpha 2012 core
  • If you load a rom archived as *.zip, this will crash the emulator.
  • If you load a rom archived as *.7z, this will fail to recognize the file.

FB Alpha 2012 Neo Geo core
  • If you load a rom archived as *.zip, this will crash the emulator.
  • This core does not recognize the *.7z format as a valid rom.

***

Temporary solution until the Libretro dev team fix the bugs.
1. Use Notepad to save dummy text files named with the *.7z file extension for the three games. You do not need to create one for the bios.
  • kof2000.7z
  • lastblad.7z
  • mslug5.7z

2. Place those dummy files within the same directory as the Neo Geo roms. For example:
  • sdmc:/roms/neogeo/
    • kof2000.7z
    • kof2000.zip
    • lastblad.7z
    • lastblad.zip
    • mslug5.7z
    • mslug5.zip
    • neogeo.zip

3. On the 3DS, launch RetroArch and select the dummy *.7z corresponding to the game you wish to play. Use the Arcade (FB Alpha 2012) core.
  • Despite selecting the dummy *.7z, RetroArch will point to the *.zip file. Someone derped in their coding. :P
  • Exiting RetroArch with the (HOME) button or Quick Menu in-emulator option will crash the 3DS unless you first Close Content for the rom that's loaded.
    • The *.3dsx version allows exiting RetroArch in-game with their Quick Menu.
