Hacking R4i Gold 3ds Deluxe on 4.4.0-10U - Help with grey card!

Hey guys, I bought a 3ds on ebay running 4.4.0. I loaded up all the files on the grey card for the first run, and every time the card tried to boot I got "An error has occurred. Please restart...". I contacted r4i support and they told me I had to use a 4.4.0 patch on the grey cart in the form of an .nds file, which had to be executed on a DS lite or DSi and appropriate flash card. I don't own a DS lite and I don't want to go buy one just for this patch, so is there any other way to apply it?

So is there anyway to do it without a DS lite?

Maybe you have a friend who owns a DS Lite/ DSi.

What about... going into a store that has DSi/ ds lite consoles to test and update it there?
